THE NINETEENTH BOSTON AREA
MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE
A premier conference on the collegiate Model UN circuit, the Boston Area Regional Model United Nations (BarMUN) Conference is Boston University's annual collegiate Model United Nations conference. This year, the conference will be moving to the Hilton Boston Park Plaza, a historic hotel located in the heart of downtown Boston near the city’s Theater District and the Boston Common. The area is surrounded by iconic places such as the Public Garden and Beacon Hill, and sits just steps away from Newbury Street’s picture-perfect shops and cafés. The hotel is within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and theaters, and whether you are craving top-tier Italian food from the North End or a historical tour of Boston, the rest of the city is but a short train ride away.
BarMUN is a branch of the Boston University International Affairs Association (BUIAA), the largest student group on the campus of Boston University. Between its branches, the Association welcomes more than 450 unique members across schools and class years. Learn more about us here.
PROFESSIONALISM, INSPIRATION, AND PASSION
Our motto of "Professionalism, Inspiration, and Passion" dictates our goal to provide a truly unique conference experience for our delegates and staff, from committees to social events to accommodations, with the utmost dedication and passion towards uplifting the MUN community and serving world beyond it. We are a conference that believes in justice and equity for all, and we believe that rivers of change can begin at any source — including delegates like you.
“MAKE WAVES”
BarMUN’s slogan, “Make Waves,” is more than a slogan—it reflects the spirit of our conference and the role delegates play in shaping the tide of the future. Our conference’s slogan challenges delegates to lead with purpose and to think boldly in an ever-changing global landscape. Just as waves begin with single ripples over much larger bodies of water, meaningful changes in international affairs begin with individuals who are willing to speak up and challenge existing boundaries. Throughout the conference, delegates are encouraged to engage in thoughtful debate and collaborate with their peers to develop creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. By debating and working collaboratively, delegates not only have the opportunity to simulate diplomacy, but to make waves of their own—creating ideas and partnerships that turn into waves of change beyond conference weekend.
COMMITTEES OFFERED
general assemblies
BarMUN is excited to bring back its double-delegate General Assembly committee, one larger General Assembly, and two smaller Economic and Social Councils. Delegates can expect a competitive and collaborative environment in a larger committee with delegates from most of BarMUN’s delegations.
Specialized Committees
BarMUN’s specialized committees are mid-sized committees that address a variety of topics and are run based on a non-traditional procedure. Each of these committees are run uniquely, with many incorporating a blend of General Assembly and crisis elements.
crisis committees
Crisis committees have been the crux of BarMUN from the very beginning. We prioritize a smaller sized crisis committee with heavy involvement from staff and highly engaging topics. BarMUN XIX will also offer a joint crisis committee in addition to its advanced committees.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
BarMUN XIX, hosted in close alignment with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, recognizes the land that the City of Boston and Boston University lie on and its historical connection to several indigenous groups, including the Wampanoag and the Massachusett peoples. In addition, we recognize and respect the connections these groups held to other indigenous nations located throughout the region, as they continue to shape Boston, its history, and its people into the place we love today. While Indigenous Peoples’ Day in particular honors the history of our ancestors, the BarMUN Secretariat understands that this statement does not undo the harm inflicted upon these peoples and their land over several centuries. We thus encourage our community to educate themselves upon our past injustices, and remain accountable to them, on this day and every day.
